Is there an Olympian in you?

2016 Olympics

The Olympics are inspiring. They start slow and within just a few hours I am hooked – it’s the competition, the human grit, the challenge, the cheering for the home team. Watching the athletes makes me realize how amazing the human body is and what it can endure…to say nothing of the human spirit. Everything plays out in the Olympics – emotional drama, physical success and physical pain, elation and devastation, individual success and teamwork. What really stands out is the incredible determination, planning, goal setting, and confidence the competitors have; they believe they can do it! I believe we all have the potential to be an Olympian in our own world. Those characteristics are there; we just need to dig deep and find them.

This week I felt healthier just watching the Games…and, after Kristin Armstrong won her 3rd Gold Medal, I almost went out and bought a new bike! I have a renewed interest in my physical health from my nutrition to my activity level. In what ways do the Summer Olympics inspire you and your family to be more healthy?

Make time to take time.

Take Time

I was asked at a recent meeting to intro myself and share my vacation plans. Embarrassingly, I had none. I got the “pity look” from several people. It forced me to admit that vacations take planning and commitment; they don’t just happen. If I don’t plan it, it won’t happen. DUH.

I share this with you in the middle of May because it’s the perfect time for all of us to start planning…make a list of things to do, places to go – near or far – and people to spend time with. Grab your calendar, circle some dates, request the time off – now! Your plan will come together with a little work.

Most important!! – a vacation can be as simple as an afternoon off all by yourself, or a more adventurous trip involving other people. Your mission is to do something for you – go somewhere you like – spend time with people who relax or energize you. It’s about YOU!

You’ve heard it over and over – get your body in motion if you want to be healthy! But did you know that movement is good for more than your waistline? Moving your body can actually transform your world. Putting your body in motion makes you happier, less stressed, more fun, motivated, have better concentration, more confidence, improved relationships…and more. The best part? It does not have to be a workout at the gym; simply standing, walking, reaching, and bending helps your body wake up. So come on, kick it into gear!

Got stress?

I know what you’re thinking – who doesn’t have stress? It’s a fact of life. True, but there are lots of things you can do to manage chronic daily stress. And, there are many reasons beyond headaches and ragged relationships to pay attention to your stress level. The biggest reason – it affects your health. Stress can cause your immune system to falter, it can play havoc with your blood pressure and heart rate, your digestive system can go crazy and your appetite can go whacky. When stress levels are high, creativity goes out the door and options don’t seem to exist. One of the biggest downsides to stress – it ages you! Who needs that? So get on it! Visit the Stress Center for coping resources. Try some natural relaxation techniques to chill out. Only have 5 minutes? That’s okay – try these ideas.

Quick tips to keep your stress in check:

  • Meditate – it’s a mini vacation!

Don’t just sit there. Move something!

Desk Movement

Fidget. Do a desk-top drum roll. Shrug your shoulders. Turn your head left and right. Walk to your neighbor’s cubicle. Do stapler arm curls or chair leg-lifts. Stand on one foot. Dance it out. Just put it in motion. Make it your motto – “Seated for 60? Up for 3!” A general lack of movement or physical inactivity may be as deadly as smoking.  It’s true. Putting your body on “stall” is damaging. Letting it sit and idle all day while working is poisonous to your health. To top it off, if your belly is growing, your work performance may be shrinking. All good reasons to get up and move! A sedentary office job is no excuse. Use the time you sit in a chair to do some discrete exercises. Stop waiting for a trip to the gym,  or an evening walk, or some great inspiration – just start moving! Get your co-workers involved. Share the activity you do to keep yourself moving at work. Make a comment on this blog post and you are automatically entered into a drawing for one of four sets of two FREE tickets to Roaring Springs WaterPark in Meridian, ID, or one of four sets of two free tickes to Wahooz Fun Zone in Meridian, ID.
